Your Phone is a Sleep Killer

Your Phone is killing your sleep!

If you are someone who lays in bed and plays on your phone or tablet before going to bed, you are robbing yourself of good rest and recovery.

Many of us will lay in bed and scroll through our phone or read a book on a tablet until we fall asleep. In most cases, we end up falling asleep out of exhaustion vs our bodies being ready for bed.

Why is this?

The blue light emitted from these devices will prohibit our body from producing Melatonin, our bodies natural sleep/wake hormone. We as humans are designed to wake with the sun and sleep when the sun goes down. Melatonin is produced when the sun sets and we ultimately fall asleep. This process is disrupted when we stare at our blue light producing devices.

So how do we address this?

  1. The best way to address this is not the easiest, but it is to put your devices down 2 hours before you wish to go to bed. This will allow your body to produce melatonin and help you fall asleep naturally.
  2. Wear Blue Light Blocking lenses. This is a whole different discussion as to what is best. There are Lens coatings, lens materials, and colored lenses that all block some or the majority of blue light. We believe the most comprehensive Blue Light Blocking lenses without color distortion are BluTech Lenses. They offer prescription and non-prescription options so everyone can receive blue light protection. (This is not a paid endorsement)
  3. If you have an iPhone or iPad, you can turn on Nightshift to help reduce the amount of blue light emitted from your phone or iPad. This will turn the phone more of an orange color since it is not producing as much blue light.

Summary

If you have trouble falling asleep, don't feel like you get good sleep, or struggle with eye fatigue, give one or all of these a try. In most cases, you will notice a difference in a very short time frame.
